Bloomfield’s Stevens Accused of Fentanyl Methamphetamine Smuggling

ALBUQUERQUE – Bloomfield’s Joseph Stevens, 41, is in the crosshairs of federal law enforcement after being accused of a ruthless scheme involving fentanyl and methamphetamine smuggling. According to court documents, theRegion II Narcotics Task Force has been on his tail for suspected drug trafficking activities since early this year.

On September 24th, Stevens was nabbed in a high-risk traffic stop by San Juan Sheriff’s Office deputies. A K9 officer from the Farmington Police Department promptly impounded Stevens’ vehicle after a free air scent pass indicated the presence of controlled substances. Inside, authorities uncovered a trove of weaponry—19 firearms, including two reported stolen—and an alarming 329.89 grams of fentanyl pills, 10.89 grams of fentanyl powder, and 59.34 grams of methamphetamine.

Stevens is staring down charges of possession with intent to distribute both fentanyl and meth, as well as using and carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. The stakes are high for the suspect, who faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Farmington Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, and the Farmington Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eliot Neal is spearheading the prosecution.

Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, announced the charges today. The Region II Narcotics Enforcement Task Force continues to combat drug trafficking across New Mexico, with a clear mission: apprehend violators like Stevens and put them behind bars.
