Patsy Vega-Montoya, Heroin Possession with Intent to Distribute, New Mexico 2014

ALBUQUERQUE – In a gritty courtroom battle against drug trafficking, Patsy Vega-Montoya, 25, from Sonora, Mexico, was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison this morning for her role in a heroin smuggling ring. Vega-Montoya’s sentence is a stark reminder of the government’s zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking.

The Mexican national was nabbed by New Mexico State Police on September 10, 2014, near Grants, NM. During a routine traffic stop, officers discovered 5.95 kilograms of heroin hidden in her vehicle, destined for Colorado. Vega-Montoya faced charges of possession of heroin with intent to distribute.

Vega-Montoya’s downfall began when she granted police permission to search her car, leading to the discovery of 11 packages of the deadly drug. On December 8, 2014, she pled guilty to a felony information charge, facing the reality of her actions that day.

This case was brought to justice by the Albuquerque office of the DEA and New Mexico State Police, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob A. Wishard leading the prosecution. It’s part of the New Mexico Heroin and Opioid Prevention and Education (HOPE) Initiative, a collaborative effort aimed at reducing opioid-related deaths.

The HOPE Initiative is a multi-faceted approach involving prevention, treatment, law enforcement, reentry programs, and strategic planning. The Organized Crime Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and DEA are at the forefront, targeting major heroin trafficking organizations. Vega-Montoya will be deported upon completion of her sentence.

With this conviction, the HOPE Initiative continues to demonstrate its commitment to combating drug trafficking and its impact on communities across New Mexico.
