INDIANAPOLIS- Bloomington’s Jacob Magness, 23, was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for possession and distribution of fentanyl and other controlled substances.
According to court documents, on November 1, 2021, a suspicious package from California, with no return address, was intercepted at Magness’s Bloomington residence. Inside were 211 grams of fentanyl pills, 110 grams of counterfeit Xanax, and 4 grams of LSD gel. The drugs had been ordered and tracked via Snapchat.
Upon executing a search warrant on November 3, 2021, police uncovered $2,251 in cash, 20 fentanyl pills, 13 ecstasy pills, 5 grams of cocaine, 11 firearms, and multiple high-capacity magazines at Magness’s residence.
‘Fentanyl traffickers value profits over lives, using any means necessary to satisfy their greed,’ said U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Myers for the Southern District of Indiana. ‘This operation is a testament to law enforcement’s dedication to saving lives and protecting citizens from illegal drugs.’
Rodney M Hopkins, Postal Inspector in Charge for the Detroit Division, praised the collaboration between agencies. ‘Our goal to protect the nation’s mail system from criminal misuse was achieved through our partnership with Indiana State Police and Bloomington PD,’ he said.
The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Court Judge Sarah Evans Barker, who also ordered Magness to be supervised for four years upon his release. A $500 fine also applies. Assistant United States Attorney Patrick G. Gibson prosecuted the case.
