‘Clever’ Mortgage Swindle Unravels – Akron Man Faces Bank and Bankruptcy Fraud Charges

Bobbie W. Williams, a.k.a. Robert W. Williams, 56, is behind bars after an Akron man was accused of using a fraudulent Social Security number and falsifying his income to secure a $300,000 mortgage.

According to an indictment, Williams falsified information on his loan application to purchase a property located on Ridgewood Road in Akron. Following his failure to make payments, the property went into foreclosure. Williams then allegedly falsified information in his bankruptcy petition, including his true identity and ownership of the property.

The indictment alleges one count of bank fraud and two counts of bankruptcy fraud. Williams, who has been identified by multiple aliases, will face the consequences of his actions in court.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. Williams is entitled to a fair trial where the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

If convicted, Williams’ sentence will be determined by the court after considering his prior criminal record, role in the offense, and characteristics of the violations. The maximum sentence for bank and bankruptcy fraud can exceed the statutory maximum, but in most cases, it will be less than the maximum.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark S. Bennett and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Good, Trial Attorney, United States Trustee. An investigation conducted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Office of Inspector General and the Cleveland office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation led to Williams’ indictment.
