Hot Springs, AR – In a shocking turn of events, 152 months in prison was handed down to Bobby Nutt, a 38-year-old Hot Springs resident, on one count of Possession with the Intent to Distribute Cocaine and one count of Possessing a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Offense. The Honorable Chief Judge Susan O. Hickey presided over the sentencing hearing in the United States District Court in Hot Springs.
In September 2019, detectives with the Hot Springs Police Department conducted a controlled purchase of cocaine from Nutt. The next day, Nutt reported to his parole officer for an office visit. During his parole visit, Nutt’s vehicle was searched and approximately 148 grams of cocaine was seized as well as a loaded Glock pistol with a round in the chamber.
Nutt, due to the nature of his prior felony convictions, was sentenced as a Career Offender. This drastic measure was taken due to his extensive criminal record, leaving the community to question how he managed to evade capture for so long.
U.S. Attorney David Clay Fowlkes made the announcement, stating that the community will be safer with Nutt behind bars. The Hot Springs Police Department and the ATF investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney David Harris prosecuting the case.
This case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The renewed focus on targeting violent criminals has led to a decrease in violent crimes nationwide.
The sentence was handed down on a day that will not soon be forgotten in Hot Springs. With the sentence, Nutt will spend the next 12 years and 4 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. This harsh punishment serves as a warning to those who would engage in similar crimes.
