MINNEAPOLIS – A federal jury has delivered a tough verdict, convicting Bois Forte man Mark Allen Isham of two counts of assault resulting in serious and substantial bodily injury, as announced by U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger.
Isham, 61, was accused of repeatedly and violently assaulting an intimate partner at his residence within the exterior boundaries of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa Indian Reservation, starting on or about March 13, 2023. The physical abuse reached a new level on March 19, when Isham unleashed a fury of punches on the victim with a closed fist, holding them captive inside the house for days without access to their wheelchair.
The cruelty came to an end on March 24, 2023, when the victim managed to call 911 while Isham was outside chopping firewood. Two officers arrived at Isham’s residence and discovered the victim’s injuries, including a split lip, black eye, and bruising across their arms, legs, and head. The severity of the injuries necessitated surgery to repair a broken jaw.
Following a five-day trial in U.S. District Court before Judge Katherine M. Menendez, Isham was found guilty on one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury and one count of assault resulting in substantial bodily injury. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date.
This harrowing case was investigated by the FBI and the Bois Forte Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Carla J. Baumel and Nichole J. Carter trying the case on behalf of the United States.
