Rochester, NY – In a shocking turn of events, 34-year-old Bonnie Hughes pleaded guilty to production of child pornography in a federal court on an unspecified date. This heinous crime carries a mandatory minimum penalty of 15 years in prison, and a maximum of 30 years.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard A. Resnick, Hughes was involved in the production and distribution of explicit child content. The defendant’s friend, John Kohlmeier, had been engaging in sexually explicit conversations with a 10-year-old female known to Hughes.
On March 19, 2018, Hughes, at Kohlmeier’s request, took two sexually explicit photographs of the minor and sent them to Kohlmeier’s cell phone. The minor was then subjected to repeated instances of sexual contact with Kohlmeier, beginning in February 2018.
Charges remain pending against Kohlmeier, who is also facing related charges in state court. The defendant and Kohlmeier are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The investigation into Hughes’s crimes was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Greece Police Department, and the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office.
Hughes is scheduled to be sentenced on January 31, 2019, before U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa. The community is left to wonder how such a crime could have occurred, and what measures can be taken to prevent future instances of child exploitation.
As the investigation continues, the Grimy Times will provide updates on the case and its outcome. In the meantime, we urge anyone with information regarding child exploitation to come forward and report it to the authorities.
