BOSTON – Christopher Sheerer, 37, a former pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital, pleaded guilty today to offenses that would make any decent person’s blood run cold. Sheerer admitted to distributing and possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and to the sexual exploitation of children. This isn’t a case of medical malpractice; it’s a descent into the darkest corners of human depravity.
Sheerer, who previously worked at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, faces a lengthy prison sentence after entering his guilty pleas before U.S. District Court Chief Judge Denise J. Casper. Sentencing is scheduled for December 18, 2025. He’s been cooling his heels in federal custody since his arrest in July 2024, and rightfully so. The investigation began in May 2024, triggered by activity within a particularly vile online chat group. This wasn’t a public forum; it was a curated space for predators, masquerading as a community for “dads, uncles, and babysitters.”
The group operated on a sickening principle: prospective members had to ‘verify’ their status by uploading a nude photo of a child under 13 alongside a sign bearing the group’s name. Sheerer, identified through an IP address tracing back to Johns Hopkins University, allegedly uploaded imagery of a child he knew to gain access. This wasn’t random browsing; this was targeted, deliberate action. A subsequent search of Sheerer’s Boston residence revealed a trove of disturbing material on his phone, tablet, and computers. Chats detailed dozens of exchanges of CSAM with other users of the encrypted application.
Forensic analysis uncovered several pornographic images of the child known to Sheerer, apparently created in 2023. The sheer volume of evidence paints a picture of a calculated and prolonged pattern of abuse. The charges carry significant penalties. Distribution of child pornography carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years, up to 20 years in prison, and a fine of up to $250,000. Possession of child pornography carries up to 20 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. The charge of sexual exploitation of children carries a mandatory minimum of 15 years and up to 30 years in prison, plus a substantial fine.
U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley and Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Michael J. Krol announced the guilty plea today. The investigation benefited from assistance from multiple U.S. Attorney’s Offices and Homeland Security Investigations offices, as well as the Boston Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica Soto and Anne Paruti are leading the prosecution. This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 dedicated to combating child sexual exploitation.
This isn’t just about one man’s depravity; it’s about a network of predators and the urgent need to protect vulnerable children. Project Safe Childhood aims to dismantle these networks, identify victims, and bring perpetrators to justice. Resources are available at https://www.justice.gov/psc.
