Boston – In a stunning turn of events, former Boston Police Officer Joseph Nee has been sentenced for his involvement in a brazen overtime fraud scheme that took place at the Boston Police Department’s (BPD) evidence warehouse. Nee, 50, from Taunton, was handed two years’ probation by U.S. District Court Judge Patti B. Saris, along with a $2,000 fine and restitution of $12,636.
The saga began in June 2021 when Nee pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit theft concerning programs receiving federal funds and one count of embezzlement from an agency receiving federal funds. His fraudulent activities spanned from January 2015 through August 2017.
Nee, it emerged, submitted false overtime slips for hours he did not work during two shifts: the ‘purge’ shift, a weekday evening devoted to disposing of old evidence, and the ‘kiosk’ shift, where officers would collect prescription drugs from across Boston. Despite claiming to work full shifts, Nee often left early or exaggerated his hours.
Between 2015 and 2017, Nee personally pocketed around $12,636 for overtime hours he never logged. The scheme was part of a wider investigation that saw 15 officers charged; ten were convicted, four were acquitted in April 2023, and one officer passed away pending charges.
Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy; Russell W. Cunningham, Special Agent in Charge of the Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General; and Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Boston Division, all announced the sentencing today. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mark Grady and Kunal Pasricha prosecuted the case.
