Gabriel Krusen, Possessing a Firearm as a Convicted Felon, Iowa 2023

SIOUX CITY, IA – Gabriel Krusen, 46, of Sioux City, is facing more than two years behind bars after a federal judge handed down a 34-month sentence for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and a known drug user. Krusen’s run from the law culminated in a standoff with authorities and the discovery of a cache of illegal substances.

The case unfolded over several months, starting July 31, 2023, when Woodbury County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to serve a protection order at Krusen’s residence. Deputies encountered fierce resistance, with Krusen repeatedly evading arrest by either fleeing or barricading himself inside, fortifying his position with barrels, barbed wire, and other obstacles. A loaded shotgun was discovered positioned near the barricaded entrance, a clear threat to responding officers. That night, Krusen was taken into custody on multiple driving violations and served with the protection order. A subsequent search of the property yielded drug paraphernalia, methamphetamine, marijuana, and the illegally possessed firearm.

The trouble didn’t end there. On February 3, 2024, while out on pre-trial release, deputies responded to a disturbance at Krusen’s home, discovering an assault had occurred. Given his history of resistance, the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office called in the SWAT team, utilizing an armored vehicle for a safe approach. Krusen eventually surrendered without further incident. He was immediately arrested and charged with domestic abuse assault- injury or mental illness – charges that remain pending in Woodbury County District Court.

On June 21, 2024, United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand delivered the sentence in Sioux City: 34 months’ imprisonment, followed by a three-year term of supervised release. Forget parole; the federal system doesn’t offer it. Krusen is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals Service, awaiting transfer to a designated federal prison facility.

This prosecution was a direct result of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN focuses on targeting the most dangerous offenders and collaborating with local programs to prevent future criminal activity. The program’s effectiveness is based on evidence and a comprehensive approach to tackling violent crime at the community level.

The investigation was conducted by the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild handling the prosecution.
