Fatal Fentanyl Trafficking in Texas: Couple Faces Life Behind Bars
In a shocking display of brazen drug smuggling, Taneka Desha Felder, 27, of Amarillo, and Gustavo Morales Aguilar, 40, a naturalized U.S. citizen living in Dumas, have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import 11.65 kilograms of fentanyl, a highly potent and deadly opioid.
The couple’s ill-fated trip to Mexico in December 2024 ended in their arrest after authorities discovered the fentanyl hidden in a specially-manufactured compartment under the center console of their car during secondary inspection at the Lincoln Juarez International Bridge.
According to court documents, Felder and Morales Aguilar traveled to Mexico on December 17, 2024, where they allowed drug smugglers to load their car with 10 bundles of fentanyl powder. The pair then attempted to enter the United States, but their plan was foiled when Customs and Border Protection agents discovered the hidden compartment containing the deadly substance.
In a bizarre twist, the couple admitted that they purchased the car just a few days before traveling to Mexico, specifically for the purpose of smuggling drugs back into the United States. Their scheme was to deliver the fentanyl to other individuals in Dallas and collect a payment for their services.
Felder and Morales Aguilar are now facing up to life in federal prison and a possible $10 million maximum fine, as determined by U.S. District Judge Diana Saldaña. The pair remains in custody pending sentencing, which is expected to take place at a later date.
The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations, in collaboration with Customs and Border Protection. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose Homero Ramirez prosecuted the case.
