BOWLING GREEN, OH – A gritty tale of greed and betrayal unfolded in a federal courtroom as Mickael C. Jones was sentenced to pay $14,000 in restitution for his despicable act of stealing from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
The 36-year-old man was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release after pleaded guilty to illegally converting funds intended for surviving-spouse pension benefits.
Jones’ aunt’s tragic demise on May 2009 became a springboard for his criminal enterprise. Despite her death, the VA remained oblivious, continuing monthly direct deposits into her bank account. The unsuspecting Jones dipped into these funds, using them for his personal gain, court documents reveal.
According to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Jones’ actions are a stark reminder of the trust betrayed when those entrusted with public funds act with such callous disregard.
The Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General was the investigating agency in this case. Assistant United States Attorney Thomas A. Karol handled the prosecution with a keen eye for justice.
This conviction sends a chilling message to those who might consider misappropriating public funds: your time on the wrong side of the law is finite, and you will be held accountable.
