Sergio Sosa Sentenced for Tax Scheme, Utah 2024
A Utah tax preparer has been sentenced to prison for his role in a massive tax scheme and obstructing the IRS’s efforts to collect his tax debt. Sergio Sosa, the owner of Sergio Central Latino, a tax preparation business based in Orem, Utah, was sentenced to 37 months in prison for concealing his assets and income from the IRS.
According to court documents, Sosa conspired to defraud the United States by hiding his assets and income from the IRS. He also failed to timely file his own tax returns or pay the taxes he owed for 15 years, from 2003 to 2017. This resulted in a tax debt of over $1.1 million.
But that wasn’t all – Sosa also obstructed the IRS’s efforts to collect his tax debt by using nominees to open business bank accounts, renaming his business, and making false statements to the IRS. He even went so far as to direct one of his children to make mortgage payments on his personal residence using funds he provided.
The IRS-Criminal Investigation unit investigated the case, and Trial Attorney Ahmed Almudallal of the Tax Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Ruth Hackford-Peer for the District of Utah prosecuted the case.
U.S. District Judge David Sam ordered Sosa to serve 36 months of supervised release and to pay $1,104,737 in restitution to the United States.
Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department’s Tax Division and U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins for the District of Utah made the announcement.
