Mickael C. Jones, VA Benefits Fraud, Ohio 2010

BOWLING GREEN, OH — A shocking case of greed and betrayal has hit the streets of Bowling Green as 36-year-old Mickael C. Jones stands accused of siphoning off a staggering $14,000 from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

According to a recent indictment filed by United States Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach for the Northern District of Ohio, Jones is charged with using funds meant for his late aunt’s VA surviving-spouse pension benefits.

The saga began in May 2009 when Jones’ aunt passed away, but he remained oblivious to her passing. Despite this, the VA continued to deposit monthly pension checks into her account. Rather than reporting the error, Jones dipped his hands into the coffers for his own gain, withdrawing the funds over an 18-month period.

The scheme lasted from May 2009 until December 2010, during which time Jones defrauded the VA of approximately $14,000. If convicted, he faces a sentence determined by the Court, considering factors such as prior criminal record and the severity of the violation.

This case is being investigated by the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General, with Assistant United States Attorney Thomas A. Karol handling the prosecution.

It’s important to note that an indictment is merely a charge and does not prove guilt. Jones will have his day in court, where the government must prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Stay tuned as Grimy Times continues to follow this case and bring you the latest updates on this disturbing crime of betrayal against our nation’s veterans.
