Jermain R. Stevenson, Identity Theft, Ohio 2023

TOLEDO, OH – Jermain R. Stevenson, a 23-year-old Toledo resident, has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison for masterminding an identity theft scheme that swindled banks out of $62,000.

The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Steven M. Dettelbach, announced the sentence following Stevenson’s guilty plea earlier this year to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft charges.

According to court documents, Stevenson exploited personal information he had obtained online, including names, Social Security numbers, and credit card details. He used this sensitive data to rack up approximately $62,000 worth of goods and services between 2010 and 2012, leaving a trail of financial devastation in his wake.

But the deceit didn’t end there. During his sentencing hearing, authorities revealed that Stevenson had even attempted to maintain his fraudulent operations from behind bars by accessing computers and directing others to conduct illegal money transfers via Western Union, Liberty Reserve, and other services.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was instrumental in investigating this case, with Assistant United States Attorney Joseph R. Wilson handling the prosecution.

Stevenson’s sentence sends a stern message about the consequences of identity theft and cybercrime, ensuring that those who perpetrate such schemes face significant punishment.
