CHICAGO, IL – Brandon Ellis, 30, is headed back to federal prison after receiving an 84-month sentence for illegally possessing a loaded handgun on a Chicago street. The August 15, 2021 incident saw Ellis caught on Chicago Police Department (CPD) surveillance brazenly displaying the weapon in his waistband to another individual, escalating tensions in a high-crime area.

According to court documents, when CPD officers attempted to stop Ellis, he bolted, leading to a brief foot chase. Officers quickly apprehended him and recovered a semiautomatic pistol tucked into his waistband. The gun, authorities discovered, had been previously reported stolen, adding another layer to the charges against the repeat offender.

This isn’t Ellis’s first rodeo with the law. This conviction marks his third federal conviction for illegal firearm possession in the last five years. He had only recently completed a prior term of imprisonment – less than four months prior to this latest offense – demonstrating a clear disregard for the law and public safety. The revolving door of justice seems to have finally slammed shut, but not before Ellis had ample opportunity to endanger the community.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Vikas Didwania, in a scathing sentencing memorandum, argued that Ellis’s actions weren’t just about possessing an illegal weapon, but about creating a “volatile and potentially deadly situation.” Didwania pressed for a severe sentence, emphasizing that Ellis needed to be held accountable and removed from the streets to protect the public. The government’s argument clearly resonated with U.S. District Judge Ronald A. Guzman.

The sentence was announced jointly by U.S. Attorney John R. Lausch, Jr. for the Northern District of Illinois, Kristen de Tineo, Special Agent-in-Charge of the ATF’s Chicago Field Division, and Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown. The case is a prime example of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through targeted federal prosecution of illegal gun possessors.

Lausch’s office has been aggressively deploying the PSN program across the Northern District of Illinois, focusing heavily on firearm offenses. While the sentence offers a temporary reprieve from Ellis’s criminal activity, it remains to be seen if it will finally deter him from a life of crime.
