Grimy Times has learned that Brandon Goad, a 20-year-old from Marion, Iowa, was sentenced to over a year in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm as a user of marijuana.
A traffic stop on September 8, 2020, led police to discover a loaded .22 caliber firearm in Goad’s possession. Goad also admitted to possessing marijuana during the stop and being a user of the substance.
On Thursday, Goad appeared before United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids, where he was sentenced to 21 months’ imprisonment. As part of his sentence, Goad will also serve a three-year term of supervised release after completing his prison term.
The case against Goad was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through evidence-based strategies. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs to address violent crime in communities.
The case is also part of Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s signature initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. Project Guardian enhances coordination among federal, state, local, and tribal authorities in investigating and prosecuting gun crimes.
Goad is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lisa C. Williams and investigated by the Marion Police Department.
