Counterfeit Check Cashing Scheme Rocks Western Pennsylvania
A brazen scheme to cash counterfeit checks in Western Pennsylvania has landed a Georgia man behind bars. Brandon Roseberry, 24, of Snellville, was sentenced to 27 months incarceration and three years supervised release on his conviction of conspiracy to make and utter counterfeit securities.
According to the evidence presented in court, Roseberry orchestrated a conspiracy to recruit individuals to negotiate counterfeit checks at banks in Western Pennsylvania in October 2011. This nefarious plan resulted in losses of nearly $130,000 to local banks.
The investigation that led to Roseberry’s downfall was conducted by the Western Pennsylvania Financial Crimes Task Force (WPFCTF). This task force is a collaborative effort between multiple agencies, including the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania, the United States Secret Service, the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, the Allegheny County Police Department, the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, and the Pennsylvania State Police.
Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci prosecuted this case on behalf of the government. U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton commended the WPFCTF for their hard work in bringing Roseberry to justice.
Roseberry’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in financial crimes. The Western Pennsylvania community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the perpetrators of this scheme will be held accountable for their actions.
The case highlights the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies in combating financial crimes. The WPFCTF’s efforts demonstrate a commitment to protecting the public from nefarious schemes like the one orchestrated by Roseberry.
The sentencing of Roseberry serves as a warning to would-be perpetrators of financial crimes: the Western Pennsylvania community will not tolerate such schemes and will work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.
