A Naples man will face up to five years in prison for making false statements to the FBI about a sex trafficking ring.
Brandon Todd, 20, of Naples, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court yesterday to making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
According to U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr., Todd called the FBI in April and early May 2013 claiming to have information about sex trafficking. He also claimed to be involved in the practice and to have connections to a group involved in it.
Following the defendant’s calls, the FBI began an investigation into Todd’s claims. However, Todd made false statements to an FBI Special Agent on July 10, 2013, saying he had recruited approximately 49 girls for a sex trafficking ring and that he was a member of a gang.
The FBI Special Agents, under the direction of Special Agent In Charge Brian Boetig, conducted an investigation into Todd’s false claims.
Todd’s plea is a major blow to the Naples community, where sex trafficking has been a growing concern.
Sentencing is scheduled for May 15, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. before Judge Frank P. Geraci, Jr. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer M. Noto is handling the case.
This case is a reminder that anyone who provides false information to law enforcement will face consequences. The FBI takes all claims of sex trafficking seriously and will investigate them thoroughly.
As the investigation continues, it is clear that Todd’s actions were a waste of valuable resources that could have been used to investigate real sex trafficking cases.
