A Martinsburg jury has nothing to do with a recent case involving a Maryland man being sentenced for firearms trafficking in West Virginia. In this case, it was the court that ruled against the defendant.
Brayan Mengou, age 22, of Hagerstown, Maryland, was sentenced to 60 months of incarceration for participating in a firearms trafficking conspiracy. The sentencing took place on not specified in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
According to the court documents, Mengou pled guilty in July 2020 to one count of ‘Aiding and Abetting Illegal Transportation or Receipt in State of Residency of Firearms Purchased or Acquired Outside of State of Residency.’
Mengou worked with others to transport several firearms from Berkeley County to Maryland in October 2019. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives investigated.
Chief U.S. District Judge Gina M. Groh presided over the case.
Brayan Mengou’s conviction marks a significant blow to firearms trafficking in the region. The case highlights the importance of law enforcement agencies working together to combat this type of crime.
As the investigation and prosecution of firearms trafficking cases continue, the public can expect to see more convictions and sentencing in the coming months.
