Felony Gun Charges Land West Virginia Man Behind Bars
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Kevin Wayne Britton, 54, of Danville, has pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, setting the stage for a lengthy prison sentence. Britton’s guilty plea comes as a result of a probe by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
According to court documents, on September 1, 2023, Britton was found in possession of a Savage model 67F 12-gauge shotgun and a Hoban Manufacturing model 45 .22-caliber rifle in the South Charleston area. Britton, well aware of his prior felony conviction for obstruction of justice in United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia on November 15, 2012, had no business owning or possessing these firearms.
Under federal law, a person with a prior felony conviction is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition. Britton’s blatant disregard for the law has now landed him in a world of trouble. He is scheduled to be sentenced on August 21, 2024, and faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
United States Attorney Will Thompson commended the ATF for their investigative work, stating, ‘The ATF’s dedication to reducing gun violence in our communities is unwavering.’ Thompson’s words are a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies working to keep our neighborhoods safe.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting focused enforcement priorities. With the violent crime reduction strategy in full swing, law enforcement agencies are working together to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr., presided over the hearing, while Assistant United States Attorney Troy D. Adams prosecuted the case. The case number is 2:24-cr-30, and related court documents can be found on PACER.
