A shocking case of domestic violence has come to light in the rural town of Laguna, New Mexico. Bret Anthony Vallo, a 31-year-old member of the Laguna Pueblo Tribal, has been charged with kidnapping, assault of an intimate partner by strangling, and assault with a dangerous weapon.
According to court records, Vallo unlawfully confined his intimate partner, identified as Jane Doe, on March 21, 2019. The disturbing case took a turn for the worse on May 30, 2019, when Vallo assaulted Doe by strangling and suffocating her. The investigation revealed that between July 1 and July 15, 2019, Vallo assaulted Doe with a metal bar, with the intent to cause her bodily harm.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated this case with assistance from the Pueblo of Acoma Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Robert James Booth II is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is only an allegation, and Vallo will remain on conditions of release pending trial. The court has not scheduled a trial date yet.
Vallo faces a maximum sentence of 151 months in prison if convicted. The case serves as a grim reminder of the devastating effects of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help when needed.
