BILLINGS — A woman’s life was forever changed when she was stabbed through a car window by a Lame Deer man in a fit of rage over $20. Brett William James Jones, 29, was sentenced to 33 months in prison for the assault, which occurred on May 18, 2019, in Lame Deer, located on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation.
The incident began when Jones, intoxicated, went to a residence and started a confrontation over the small amount of money. Witnesses reported that Jones began threatening people with a knife before the victim, Jane Doe, got into a van to drive to the police station and report the disturbance. However, she stopped when she saw Jones in front of the van.
Jones then broke the driver’s side window before stabbing Doe in the arm. Doe was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries. The incident was thoroughly investigated by the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case.
Jones pleaded guilty to assault resulting in bodily injury in August 2021. U.S. District Judge Susan P. Watters presided over the case.
The government alleged in court documents that Jones was intoxicated and started a confrontation over $20. Witnesses indicated that Jones began threatening people with a knife before the assault.
The sentence of 33 months in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release is a stark reminder of the severity of Jones’ actions. The case serves as a warning to those who would resort to violence to settle disputes.
