BRONX, NY – AUSTIN MORRISHOW, 27, of the Bronx, will spend the next 15 years in a federal prison cell after being sentenced today for his role in a brazen shooting that left a five-year-old girl seriously wounded. The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska, represents the maximum penalty allowed by law for the illegal possession of ammunition connected to the June 30, 2023, incident.
The incident unfolded at a sidewalk vigil – a gathering steeped in tragic irony, as it honored a victim of a previous shooting. Instead of mourning peacefully, MORRISHOW and his accomplice, CURTIS WHITE, 28, unleashed a hail of gunfire upon fleeing vehicles. MORRISHOW, firing a .40 caliber pistol, and WHITE, wielding a .380 caliber handgun, turned a moment of grief into a scene of chaos and terror. A stray bullet ripped through one of the cars, lodging in the chest of a five-year-old girl, narrowly missing her vital organs.
“Morrishow’s brazen acts left a bullet in a five-year-old child’s chest,” stated U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton. “Instead of accepting responsibility, Morrishow remained a fugitive for eight months.” The scene was littered with evidence – seven .40 caliber shell casings, two .380 casings, and bullet-riddled vehicles. Photographs taken at the scene, reviewed by Grimy Times, clearly show MORRISHOW aiming his weapon at the escaping cars, and the damage sustained to the vehicle carrying the young victim.
MORRISHOW wasn’t a stranger to the system. He was already on supervised release for a prior federal conviction stemming from a narcotics conspiracy where he used and carried a firearm, earning him a 60-month prison sentence previously. This latest offense, committed while under supervision, further demonstrates a blatant disregard for the law. WHITE also had a criminal history, with a prior state conviction for attempted first-degree assault with a weapon, precluding him from legally possessing firearms.
WHITE was apprehended shortly after the shooting in July 2023, but MORRISHOW managed to evade law enforcement for eight months before being taken into custody in February 2024. Despite his attempts to flee justice, the net closed in, and today he faced the consequences of his actions. In addition to the 15-year prison term, MORRISHOW will serve three years of supervised release and is ordered to pay restitution to the young victim. WHITE previously received a 51-month sentence, followed by three years of supervised release and restitution.
U.S. Attorney Clayton praised the New York City Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the U.S. Marshals Service for their diligent work in bringing MORRISHOW and WHITE to justice. This case serves as a stark reminder that senseless gun violence will not be tolerated, and those who endanger innocent lives will be relentlessly pursued and held accountable.
