NEWARK, N.J. – A Bronx man was sentenced to 44 months in prison for robbing a bank in Fort Lee, New Jersey, at knifepoint in January 2017.
"This sentence brings an end to a brazen and frightening crime," said U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito in a statement. "We appreciate the hard work of our law enforcement partners in bringing this defendant to justice."
Andres Dominguez, 39, pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery before U.S. District Judge William H. Walls in federal court. Dominguez was originally arrested on Jan. 13, 2017.
According to court documents, Dominguez robbed the Bank of New Jersey in Fort Lee on Jan. 12, 2017. The robber, wearing a disguise, demanded money from a teller at knifepoint, threatening to kill the teller if they didn’t comply. The teller handed over the money, and Dominguez fled the scene.
Law enforcement later recovered evidence from the crime scene, including a large kitchen knife, blue rubber gloves, a gray Nike hooded sweatshirt, and a dark wool hat. Dominguez was identified and arrested in the Bronx.
As part of his sentence, Dominguez also received three years of supervised release. U.S. Attorney Carpenito credited special agents of the FBI for their investigation, which was led by Special Agent in Charge Gregory W. Ehrie in Newark. He also thanked the Fort Lee Police Department for its contribution to the case.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason S. Gould of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Newark.
This case is a reminder of the importance of community policing and the need for residents to report suspicious activity to the authorities. If you have any information about this crime, please contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
