Brookings Man Pleads Guilty to Goose Hunting Scandal
A shocking case of wildlife abuse has come to light in South Dakota, where a group of friends, known as ‘Team Those Guys,’ went on a goose hunting spree that left 54 geese dead. Chris Paclik, a 21-year-old Brookings resident, has plead guilty to violating the Lacey Act and taking migratory birds unlawfully.
According to the indictment, Paclik and his friends hunted between November 24 and November 29, 2012, in Miner County, South Dakota. The group used an electronic device to kill the geese, despite knowing it was illegal to do so during that time of year. Paclik then transported 11 of the dead geese to his home in Brookings, in clear violation of federal law.
The investigation, conducted by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, revealed the extent of Paclik’s involvement in the goose hunting scandal. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges is prosecuting the case, and Paclik has been released on bond pending sentencing, which has been set for August 19, 2013.
Paclik faces a maximum penalty of 1 year of imprisonment, a $100,000 fine, or both, as well as 1 year of supervised release, an additional year of supervised release upon revocation, and a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The case highlights the need for stricter wildlife conservation laws and more effective enforcement. As a society, we must take steps to protect our natural resources and prevent senseless acts of animal abuse.
The sentencing of Chris Paclik will take place on August 19, 2013. In the meantime, the community is left to grapple with the devastating consequences of Paclik’s actions. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
In a related development, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has announced plans to increase enforcement efforts in the region, with a focus on protecting migratory birds and other wildlife. The agency has also pledged to work closely with local communities to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation.
