A 45-year-old Brooklyn man has been charged with a brazen gunpoint robbery of a postal worker, as well as multiple counts of mail theft, wire fraud, and identity theft.
Alfonso Forney, of Brooklyn, New York, was hit with a 10-count indictment yesterday, alleging that he committed a series of violent robberies and thefts against United States Postal Service mail carriers between January 2023 and December 2023.
According to the indictment, Forney and his accomplices used gunpoint to rob mail carriers of universal keys, which allowed them to access postal boxes and steal mail, including checks, which were then deposited into Forney’s bank accounts or cashed.
But that was just the beginning. Forney allegedly went on to commit an identity theft scheme, using a victim’s identity to access their bank accounts, withdraw over $245,000, and even purchase a vehicle in the victim’s name.
“The safety of our mail carriers is essential to assuring the unobstructed flow of goods, checks and information through the United States Postal Service,” said Breon Peace, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
Forney faces up to 39 years in prison if convicted. The government’s case is being handled by the Office’s General Crimes Section, with Assistant United States Attorney Sean M. Sherman leading the prosecution.
The defendant’s initial appearance is scheduled for this afternoon before United States Magistrate Judge Joseph A. Marutollo at the federal courthouse in Brooklyn.
Forney’s alleged crimes are a stark reminder of the dangers faced by mail carriers every day, and the importance of protecting them.
