New York – A chilling revelation today as Attorney General Letitia James releases body-cam footage from the harrowing death of Nancy Loftus, a fatal encounter with New York State Police (NYSP) in Orange County. The footage captures the tense moments leading to Loftus’ tragic demise on April 12, 2025.
The incident began around 2:30 a.m. when NYSP troopers were dispatched to a residence in Deerpark following reports of an assault with a knife. Arriving at the scene, they confronted Loftus outside, wielding what appeared to be a gun. Troopers repeatedly ordered her to surrender the weapon and raise her hands. The situation escalated quickly as the officers discharged their service weapons, ultimately striking Loftus. She was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead upon arrival.
Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) launched a thorough probe into the fatal encounter. OSI is tasked with assessing every reported incident where an officer may have caused death by act or omission, whether on-duty or off-duty, regardless of the circumstances.
Attorney General James has directed that camera footage obtained during OSI investigations be released to the public to enhance transparency and bolster trust in law enforcement matters.
