Steven Bynum, a 38-year-old Brooklyn man, has pleaded guilty to firing a handgun into a group of people in furtherance of a drug distribution dispute, wounding a pregnant innocent bystander.
According to court filings, Bynum and his co-conspirators stole drugs from another dealer in early 2017 and then distributed those drugs at the Kingsborough Houses in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The victim was hit twice in the head on September 10, 2017, and still suffers from partial paralysis and permanent cognitive damage.
Bynum was arrested and charged in 2019 with violating federal laws related to narcotics trafficking. He faces up to life in prison when sentenced.
“This case is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of gun violence and the importance of our work to reduce violent crime in our communities,” said Richard P. Donoghue, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program bringing together law enforcement and the community to reduce violent crime. The government’s case is being handled by the Office’s International Narcotics and Money Laundering Section.
Assistant United States Attorneys Francisco J. Navarro and Temidayo Aganga-Williams are in charge of the prosecution. The defendant is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date.
Bynum, also known as “Nitty,” is a Brooklyn resident. The case is being prosecuted in federal court in Brooklyn and is part of a larger effort to combat violent crime in the city.
