WASHINGTON – George Maurice Brooks, 54, of Washington, D.C., faced the chilling reality of a six-year prison term today after he was sentenced for his premeditated assault on an innocent man outside an emergency shelter in Northeast Washington. U.S. Attorney Channing D. Phillips announced the severe penalty.
Brooks had earlier this year pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated assault in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, with the court’s approval stipulating a six-year sentence. The Honorable Judith Bartnoff delivered the sentence today, following which Brooks will also be subjected to three years of supervised release.
The government’s evidence detailed an afternoon of horror on November 12, 2016, when Brooks and his victim had been arguing outside an emergency shelter at the 2200 block of Adams Place NE. The verbal spat escalated into violence, necessitating intervention from a security guard. Yet, it wasn’t enough; minutes later, Brooks resorted to stabbing his fellow shelter-goer multiple times. The victim was rushed to the hospital with serious stab wounds to his face, ribcage, and back. One day after the incident, Brooks turned himself in to authorities.
Announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Phillips hailed the efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department’s investigators who worked tirelessly on this case. He also extended his gratitude towards Assistant U.S. Attorneys Richard Barker and Vivien Cockburn for their dedication in investigating and prosecuting the case.
The grim incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking even within the confines of emergency shelters, highlighting the necessity for vigilance and security amidst the most vulnerable populations.
