A Beloit man’s reign of terror has come to an end. Byron D. Broomfield, 37, was sentenced on June 4, 2024, to 6 ½ years in federal prison for possessing firearms after a felony conviction and maintaining a drug-involved premises.
Broomfield’s downfall began in January 2023, when the Beloit Police Department started investigating him for suspected drug trafficking. What they found in his trash would be the tip of the iceberg: evidence of substantial marijuana dealing. Officers stationed outside Broomfield’s home on March 6 observed two suspicious transactions, catching individuals leaving the residence with large quantities of marijuana.
The investigation led to a search warrant at Broomfield’s residence, where police found 6,599 grams of marijuana commercially packaged for distribution, and a loaded Taurus G3C 9mm handgun with Broomfield’s DNA on it. His car yielded a Glock Model 19 handgun with a Glock ‘switch’ attached, and a Masterpiece Arms Defender 9mm handgun with an obliterated serial number.
A Glock switch converts a semi-automatic handgun into a fully functioning machine gun, making it a deadly and illicit modification. An obliterated serial number hinders law enforcement’s ability to identify and track the firearm. Broomfield’s possession of these firearms posed a significant threat to the public.
This is not Broomfield’s first rodeo with the law. In 2010, he was convicted of distributing cocaine in the Western District of Wisconsin, earning him a second federal felony conviction. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn Ginsberg handled the prosecution of this case.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Beloit Police Department, the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. This case has been brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a US Justice Department initiative aimed at reducing violent crime by coordinating state and federal prosecutors and law enforcement agencies to address gun crime and violent and drug crimes involving firearms.
