Cashius Carter, Felon in Possession of Firearm, Wisconsin 2024

MADISON, WIS. – In a grim reminder of the consequences of illegal firearm possession, Cashius Carter, 21, from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, was sentenced to 2½ years in federal prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release.

The fateful encounter with law enforcement occurred on September 25, 2024, when a Fitchburg police officer stopped Carter’s vehicle for smelling of marijuana. During the stop, Carter fled but was apprehended. Inside the vehicle, officers discovered a loaded Glock 19 9mm with an extended magazine hidden between the driver’s seat and center console, alongside almost 700 grams of marijuana.

Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory confirmed that Carter’s DNA matched the firearm, making it clear he was prohibited from legally possessing a firearm or ammunition due to a prior felony conviction for eluding an officer. At sentencing, Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson highlighted the dangers posed by Carter’s actions and his extensive criminal history, which included violence and a high-speed police chase.

Judge Peterson emphasized that the sentence was imposed to protect the public and deter Carter from engaging in further criminal activities. The investigation leading to Carter’s conviction was conducted by the Fitchburg Police Department and the ATF Madison Crime Gun Task Force, which includes federal agents and task force officers from state and local agencies throughout the Western District of Wisconsin.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan prosecuted the case. This sentencing is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Justice Department initiative to reduce violent crime through coordination between state and federal prosecutors and all levels of law enforcement, targeting gun crime and violent drug-related offenses involving firearms.
