David Barber, Possession of a Firearm within a School Zone, Wisconsin 2024

David Barber, the 38-year-old Beloit, Wisconsin resident, was handed a 42-month sentence by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley for possession of a firearm within a school zone, according to United States Attorney Timothy M. O’Shea for the Western District of Wisconsin.

The saga began when Barber fled from a traffic stop in Beloit on December 20, 2020. A silver SUV he was driving was pulled over at around 2:18 a.m., and officers discovered a revolver and open alcohol in the vehicle. The chase led to his brother’s apartment where they found a loaded .45 Colt revolver with Barber’s DNA on the trigger. The scene unfolded less than 1,000 feet from a school.

Barber was already under federal supervision following a heroin trafficking conviction when this incident occurred. U.S. District Judge Conley pointed out during sentencing that Barber has a history of violating supervision terms and facing revocation multiple times. The sentence aims to hold him accountable and safeguard the community, he added.

Under the direction of Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan, the case was a result of an investigation by the Beloit Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Barber was also sentenced to complete two years of supervised release after his prison term, with the gun and ammunition forfeited.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative effort aimed at reducing violent crime and enhancing community safety. The Department’s strategy on May 26, 2021, focused on fostering trust, supporting prevention efforts, strategic enforcement, and measuring outcomes.
