Jeffrey R Jones, Drug Trafficking, Wisconsin 2020

MILWAUKEE – Jeffrey R. Jones, 35, of Milwaukee is facing a potential lifetime in federal prison after a grand jury indictment stemming from ‘Operation Legend,’ a federal initiative targeting violent crime in the city. The indictment, issued August 25, 2020, details allegations of a significant drug trafficking operation and illegal firearm possession.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, Jones is accused of distributing heroin, fentanyl, and methamphetamine. He is also charged with possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, a clear signal to federal investigators that this wasn’t just personal use. These charges alone carry a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years, with the potential for life imprisonment if convicted, under Title 21, United States Code, Sections 841(a)(1), 841(b)(1)(A), 841(b)(1)(B), and 841(b)(1)(C).

But the indictment doesn’t stop there. Jones is further accused of being a felon in possession of eight firearms – a brazen disregard for the law. He’s also charged with possessing five of those firearms specifically to further his drug trafficking crimes, a charge that adds another five to life years onto a potential sentence under Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(c)(1)(A). The feds are building a serious case here.

‘Operation Legend’ has flooded Milwaukee with federal resources, including agents from the FBI, DEA, ATF, and U.S. Marshals Service, all working alongside local law enforcement. The initiative was launched in response to a surge in violent crime gripping several cities nationwide, and Milwaukee was squarely in the crosshairs. This case is a direct result of that increased federal presence and collaboration with the Milwaukee Police Department.

The investigation was spearheaded by the Milwaukee Police Department in conjunction with the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force. Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth M. Monfils will be prosecuting the case. It’s important to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation, and Jones is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. He is entitled to a full and fair trial.

The Department of Justice is currently celebrating its 150th anniversary. More information about the agency’s history can be found at www.Justice.gov/Celebrating150Years. But for the residents of Milwaukee, the focus remains on cleaning up the streets and holding those responsible for fueling the city’s crime wave accountable. This case is just one piece of that puzzle.
