Troy Barbone Jr, 43, and his brother Tyren Barbone, 40, enrolled members of the Navajo Nation, have been indicted for a brutal assault that left a man seriously injured in Cuba, New Mexico, on March 3, 2026. The brothers allegedly attacked the victim, John Doe, with a metal bar and shovel, causing serious bodily harm. The motive behind the attack is not yet clear. The assault occurred in Cuba, New Mexico, and the investigation involved the Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, the Navajo Nation Police Department, and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations.
The defendants are charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. If convicted, they face up to 10 years in prison. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Mondragon, and the trial has not yet been scheduled.
The investigation was led by the FBI, with assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, Justin A. Garris, announced the indictment.
The indictment is merely an allegation, and the brothers are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The case will proceed to trial, where the prosecution will seek to prove the brothers’ guilt.
