Bruce Smith Sentenced to 1½ Years for Firearms Charge in Maine

Bruce Smith, a 60-year-old man from Lincoln, Maine, has been sentenced to 1½ years in prison after being found guilty of possessing firearms while being an unlawful user of controlled substances.

According to court records, between January and April 2014, Smith was regularly using Alpha-PVP, a schedule I controlled substance and a type of illegal, street drug commonly referred to as a bath salt.

The investigation, led by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Lincoln Police Department, revealed that Smith possessed seven firearms during this time period.

Two of the firearms were seized on March 9, 2014, following a traffic stop and Smith’s arrest by the Lincoln Police Department. Two more were seized on March 11, 2014, in Bradford, Maine, and traced back to Smith. Smith possessed three more on April 8, 2014, when he was questioned by federal agents.

Smith was also found to have pawned two of the firearms for Alpha-PVP in January 2014.

Assistant United States Attorney Joel B. Casey said in a statement, ‘This case highlights the dangers of mixing firearms and controlled substances. We will continue to work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.’

Smith’s sentence includes 1½ years in prison and three years of supervised release.
