BRUNSWICK, GA – In a grim testament to the deadly consequences of drug trafficking, Makeda Atkinson, 46, was handed down a 186-month federal prison sentence for his role in the overdose death of a woman. The sentence comes after Atkinson pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Possess with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance.
Atkinson’s co-defendant, Donald Adams, 63, was previously sentenced to 126 months for the same charge. Both men are now required to serve three years of supervised release following their prison terms, with no possibility of parole in the federal system.
“Makeda Atkinson and Donald Adams were small-time drug dealers until their poison fueled the overdose death of a young mother whose body was found by her 5-year-old daughter,” U.S. Attorney Bobby L. Christine commented. “Her death should serve as a wakeup call for other drug users to seek help – and as a warning to drug traffickers that we will find and prosecute them.”
Investigations led by the Glynn County Police Department and the FBI revealed that Atkinson and Adams were selling heroin laced with Fentanyl in Brunswick. Their actions led to the death of a 32-year-old woman who overdosed after purchasing drugs from them on December 28, 2017.
“Atkinson and his co-defendant played a significant role in the death of a young mother poisoned by the drugs they were pushing,” Chris Hacker, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta, stated. “No sentence is harsh enough to bring solace to the woman’s family, but we were able to hold these defendants accountable under the law with assistance from the Glynn County Police Department.”
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys E. Greg Gilluly and Jennifer Kirkland.
