BUFFALO, NY – Eli Clark, 25, is facing a long stretch behind bars after a pre-dawn raid on his Buffalo home turned up a substantial stash of crack cocaine. Federal prosecutors announced today that Clark has been charged with possession with intent to distribute 28 grams or more of the highly addictive drug – a quantity that carries a minimum five-year prison sentence.
The bust went down in the early hours of October 21, 2016, at a residence on Crowley Avenue. According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Higgins, a search warrant yielded approximately 250 grams of suspected crack cocaine discovered right in Clark’s kitchen. That’s a quarter-kilo of pure profit potential ripped off the streets, and a serious indictment for the 25-year-old.
If convicted, Clark is looking at a maximum sentence of 40 years in federal prison and a hefty $5,000,000 fine. The investigation, a joint effort by multiple law enforcement agencies, points to a well-organized operation, though details of any potential network remain tightly sealed.
The Niagara County Drug Task Force, led by Sheriff James Voutour, spearheaded the investigation, with crucial support from the Drug Enforcement Administration (Special Agent in Charge James J. Hunt), the Erie County Sheriff’s Department (Timothy Howard), and the Buffalo Police Department (Commissioner Daniel Derenda). This wasn’t a lone wolf operation; multiple agencies worked to bring Clark down.
Clark made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder, Jr. this afternoon and is currently being held without bail pending a detention hearing scheduled for October 24, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. Expect a fight, but the evidence, if it holds up, looks damning.
It’s crucial to remember that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Eli Clark, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But with 250 grams of crack at the center of this case, the odds are stacked against him. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds.
