Buffalo Man Sentenced for Firearm Possession
A 30-year-old Buffalo man has been sentenced to 100 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Jimmy Lee Barner was convicted after a jury trial on the charges, which stemmed from a search of his Amherst Street apartment in January 2008.
New York State Parole Officers and Special Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives found the defendant in possession of firearms and ammunition at the time, despite being on parole for a previous felony state conviction.
The sentencing is the culmination of an investigation on the part of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, under the direction of Commissioner Brian Fischer, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives under the direction of Resident Agent in Charge Frank Christiano.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joseph M. Tripi and John M. Alsup handled the prosecution of the case, which was brought to a close with the sentencing of Barner.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr. announced the sentencing, which marks a significant milestone in the fight against gun violence in the community.
Barner’s sentence serves as a reminder that those who possess firearms while on parole will be held accountable for their actions.
