Fentanyl Trafficking Case Lands Buffalo Man in Prison for Up to 40 Years

A 34-year-old Buffalo man, Charles Newkirk, has pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing large quantities of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid. According to court documents, Newkirk sold significant amounts of heroin and butyryl fentanyl in the City of Buffalo between June 25, 2015, and July 28, 2015.

During that period, a confidential source made three undercover purchases of heroin and butyryl fentanyl from Newkirk, making him the target of a lengthy investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge James J. Hunt, New York Field Division, the DEA worked tirelessly to bring Newkirk to justice.

The crime carries a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, a maximum of 40 years, and a $1,000,000 fine. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Tokash is handling the case and has stated that Newkirk’s actions put numerous lives at risk.

The plea is a significant victory for law enforcement in the fight against the opioid epidemic. Newkirk’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for human life and the devastating consequences of fentanyl trafficking.

Newkirk is scheduled to be sentenced on June 7, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. before U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo. His fate will be decided in a Buffalo courtroom, where he will face the consequences of his actions.

As the opioid crisis continues to ravage communities across the country, cases like Newkirk’s serve as a reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their role in perpetuating this epidemic.

The investigation and prosecution of Newkirk’s case are a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies working to stem the tide of addiction and protect the public.
