RALEIGH — Grimy Times has exclusively learned that former North Carolina Superior Court Judge Arnold O. Jones, II has pleaded guilty to a felony charge of promising and paying gratuity to a public official. The court documents reveal that Judge Jones admitted to offering cases of beer and $100 to an FBI Task Force Officer in exchange for private text messages belonging to his wife.
Between October 10, 2015, and November 3, 2015, the evidence indicates that Jones orchestrated this illegal action to uncover alleged infidelity. Despite being aware of proper legal procedures, Jones sought to conceal the involvement of the FBI Officer in obtaining the text messages. In a shocking turn of events, the Judge also agreed to destroy physical evidence of the crime, including disks containing the requested texts and cash.
Footage captured Jones exchanging money and the disk on the steps of the Wayne County Courthouse while dressed in his judicial robe. The exchange went awry, as no text messages were ultimately obtained or delivered to Judge Jones.
Upon sentencing, Arnold O. Jones II could face a maximum penalty of two years in federal prison and fines up to $250,000 for his brazen attempt to circumvent the law. Assistant United States Attorneys William M. Gilmore and Adam F. Hulbig are leading the prosecution on behalf of the government.
This case has sent shockwaves through the legal community, highlighting the extent to which some public officials will go to satisfy personal desires at the expense of justice. The FBI conducted the investigation that led to Jones’ downfall.
