STATESVILLE, N.C. – Carlos Antonio Flores, 34, of Statesville, is staring down a potential life sentence after a federal jury found him guilty of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. The verdict, reached after a grueling three-day trial concluding yesterday, sends a clear message: move high-grade poison through Iredell County and surrounding areas, and you’ll end up caged.
The conviction was announced by U.S. Attorney Jill Westmoreland Rose for the Western District of North Carolina, alongside Nick Annan, Special Agent in Charge of ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Atlanta and the Carolinas, and Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell. This wasn’t a lone operator; Flores was a key cog in a widespread operation that flooded multiple counties with deadly product.
Court documents and trial evidence paint a damning picture. From April 2015 through October 30, 2015, Flores and his network pushed more than 15 kilograms of methamphetamine – that’s over 33 pounds – onto the streets of Iredell, Alexander, Caldwell, Catawba, and Ashe Counties. The street value? A staggering $1,500,000. This wasn’t small-time dealing; this was a full-blown, large-scale trafficking operation.
The bust came on October 30, 2015. Law enforcement caught Flores and his co-conspirators red-handed, distributing over a kilogram of 96% pure crystal “ice” methamphetamine. And where did they try to hide it? Concealed inside a cat litter box – a pathetic attempt to disguise a highly dangerous and lucrative criminal enterprise. This prosecution is part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), a multi-agency effort that has already put over 200 defendants behind bars on methamphetamine and firearms charges. OCDETF is the federal government’s primary weapon against major drug trafficking organizations, and they’re clearly making headway. Flores is just the latest domino to fall.
Flores has been cooling his heels in federal custody since his arrest in October 2015. Now, he awaits sentencing, facing a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life. He also faces a hefty fine of up to $10,000,000. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Steven R. Kaufman and Sanjeev Bhasker of the Charlotte U.S. Attorney’s Office secured the conviction, backed by investigations from HSI Charlotte, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office, and the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office.
