STATESVILLE, N.C. – In a gritty blow against North Carolina’s methamphetamine trade, 16 drug dealers were handed sentences that ranged from two years to nearly two decades in federal prison. The convictions follow an intense investigation into a major meth trafficking operation.
Jill Westmoreland Rose, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, announced the sentences on Thursday. U.S. District Judge Richard L. Voorhees presided over the sentencing hearings, which concluded today with the final defendant.
Joining in the announcement were law enforcement officials from ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, local police departments, and sheriff’s offices across the region.
The defendants, whose ages range from 19 to 48, were charged as part of an ongoing Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation. They are:
- Jerry Wayne Grant, 45, Mooresville, sentenced to 216 months
- James Edward Russell, III, 38, Hudson, sentenced to 188 months
- Teddy Dwane McGee, 41, Hickory, sentenced to 120 months
- Larry Chad Roberts, 39, Taylorsville, sentenced to 120 months

The investigation resulted in the seizure of over 20 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, $500,000 in U.S. currency and other assets, as well as dozens of firearms. Since 2015, OCDETF has targeted major drug trafficking organizations, leading to the prosecution of more than 165 individuals.
