SHREVEPORT, La. – Aaron Joseph Clark, 66, of Coushatta, Louisiana, is headed to federal prison for 83 months after being convicted of possessing methamphetamine and a shocking arsenal of firearms. U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote handed down the sentence Wednesday, along with three years of supervised release, bringing a close to a case that exposed a dangerous combination of drugs and weapons in the Louisiana backwoods.
The bust began back on January 26, 2016, when law enforcement agents targeted Clark as a drug suspect and raided his temporary residence in Ringgold, Louisiana. The search turned up more than just a little dope: a gram of methamphetamine, two grams of marijuana, and nine Xanax pills were recovered, alongside the tools of the trade – digital scales, baggies, syringes, and pipes. But it was the weapons that painted a truly disturbing picture.
Agents discovered a staggering collection of firearms: three revolvers, two derringers, four pistols, four rifles, and three shotguns. One weapon was a crudely modified shotgun with no serial number, rendering its history untraceable. Two of the shotguns had been illegally sawed off, and a cache of at least six silencers were found amongst his possessions. It was a clear indication Clark wasn’t just holding onto these weapons for sport.
The investigation didn’t stop there. Just two days later, a follow-up search revealed an additional 20 grams of methamphetamine cleverly concealed inside an ammunition bag. Clark ultimately pleaded guilty on February 2, 2017, to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. The evidence was overwhelming.
Acting U.S. Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook emphasized that this case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a Department of Justice initiative focused on reducing firearm violence by targeting dangerous felons and those illegally possessing weapons. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the ATF, Bienville Parish Sheriff’s Office, Red River Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Tri-Parish Drug Task Force.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary J. Mudrick prosecuted the case, securing a significant sentence for Clark. The message is clear: those who deal drugs and stockpile weapons in Louisiana will face the full force of federal law. This bust serves as a warning to others operating on the fringes of the law, and a reminder that the feds are watching.
