LAFAYETTE, La. – The grimy streets of Lafayette were the scene of a judicial rebuke today as Donald Domingue, 59, a former financial wizard, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for his despicable scheme that preyed on the families of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainees. Domingue’s sinister enterprise, American Immigration Consulting LLC, promised a lifeline to those ensnared by the immigration system, only to vanish after collecting their hard-earned money.
In a stark courtroom setting, U.S. District Judge Donald Walter doled out justice, sentencing Domingue on one count of wire fraud. The sentence also included three years of supervised release and an order for Domingue to pay a $10,965 restitution and a $10,000 fine. Domingue’s fraudulent activities were exposed when he made mass mailings to ICE detention centers, advertising his services as an immigration representative for illegal aliens.
Victims’ families, desperate for help, paid up in the hope that Domingue would provide assistance in their loved ones’ deportation hearings and obtain work permits. However, Domingue’s promises were nothing but empty rhetoric; after receiving payments, he cut all ties with his clients, leaving them to face deportation alone.
The scheme, which began in April 2014 and ended in October 2014, has been thoroughly investigated by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office of Professional Responsibility and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Assistant U.S. Attorneys David C. Joseph and Robert C. Abendroth handled the prosecution with tenacity.
For Domingue’s victims, this sentence is a testament to the justice system’s ability to hold even the most cunning criminals accountable for their actions. The grim reaper of financial fraud will now spend his own 18 months in prison, learning firsthand the consequences of his deceitful ways.
