Waterloo Man Pleads Guilty to Child Pornography Charges
A 68-year-old man from Waterloo, NY, has pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography, a federal crime that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
Ronald Beaton, of Waterloo, entered his guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa in Rochester, NY. The charge stems from an undercover investigation conducted by Special Agents with Homeland Security Investigations.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Tiffany H. Lee, who is handling the case, the investigation discovered that a user of an Internet Protocol address assigned to Beaton’s residence was sharing child pornography files using file-sharing software. A search warrant was executed at Beaton’s home on West Main Street in Waterloo, and agents found video files depicting child pornography on his computer.
The case against Beaton is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006. The project marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
The plea is the culmination of an investigation led by Special Agent in Charge James C. Spero of Homeland Security Investigations. Sentencing is scheduled for November 26, 2013, before Judge Siragusa.
Beaton’s guilty plea is a significant step in the fight against child pornography and exploitation. It highlights the importance of law enforcement agencies working together to protect children and hold perpetrators accountable for their crimes.
