BOSTON – In a stunning turn of events, Samuel Cruz Alvarado, a 63-year-old Honduran national, pleaded guilty in federal court to the serious charge of unlawful reentry into the United States after having been deported. The defendant, who has been unlawfully residing in Waltham, Mass., now faces up to two years in prison for his brazen actions.
Cruz Alvarado, who was deported from the United States on Nov. 26, 2012, illegally reentered the country without permission at some point after his removal. The defendant’s latest transgression came to light when he was arrested on May 5, 2025, and indicted by a federal grand jury in June of the same year.
According to court documents, Alvarado will be sentenced at a later date, with his fate resting on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutes that govern criminal sentences in the United States. The charge of unlawful reentry of a deported alien carries substantial penalties, including up to two years of imprisonment, one year of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
Should Alvarado complete his sentence, he is subject to deportation once more. The U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Acting Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston, made the announcement regarding the case, underscoring the Justice Department’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Allegra Flamm of the Major Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution of this serious offense. The case serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences faced by those who attempt to circumvent the legal system and reenter the United States illegally.
