SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The grim streets of Springfield witnessed a pivotal plea deal today as Carlos Omar Rogel-Sanchez, a 44-year-old Mexican national, stood before the court, guilty of illegal re-entry into the United States after being previously deported.
Rogel-Sanchez’s transgression came to light on July 5, 2025, when he was apprehended by the McDonald County, Missouri, Sheriff’s Office for an outstanding warrant in Joplin. The warrant stemmed from a prior assault charge, marking at least his fourth expulsion from the United States.
The defendant faces up to two years in federal prison without parole, as stipulated under federal statutes. While Congress dictates maximum penalties, individual sentences are determined by the court, taking into account advisory sentencing guidelines and other factors.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Carney is leading the prosecution of this case, with investigative efforts spearheaded by the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the McDonald County, Missouri, Sheriff’s Office.
This incident is a significant blow in Operation Take Back America, an aggressive nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and safeguarding local communities from violent crime. The operation leverages the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) to maximize resources and streamline efforts.
