Buffalo’s Shawn Woods is facing a federal indictment for his alleged role in the distribution of fentanyl and heroin in the city. Woods, 25, stands accused of possession with intent to distribute large quantities of these dangerous drugs, as well as maintaining a drug-involved premise.
The charges also include possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking activity, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in prison and a maximum of forty years. The potential fine for Woods’ crimes is a staggering $5,000,000.
According to the indictment, the illegal substances were intended for distribution in the Buffalo area on February 1, 2017. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul C. Parisi is handling the case against Woods.
In an arraignment this afternoon, U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder handled the proceedings, and Woods remains detained pending further action.
The investigation leading to the charges against Woods was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Buffalo Police Department, and Erie County Sheriff’s Office. Special Agent-in-Charge Adam S. Cohen of the FBI, Commissioner Daniel Derenda of the Buffalo Police Department, and Sheriff Timothy Howard of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office all played pivotal roles in this operation.
It is important to note that an indictment is merely an accusation, and Woods is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
