New York City’s streets are no longer safe for those who deal in deadly contraband, as CALEB ECCLES-GONSALVES faces a litany of charges after his arrest today. The Southern District of New York’s U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, along with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Special Agent in Charge Ivan J. Arvelo, Postal Inspection Service Inspector Daniel B. Brubaker, and NYPD Commissioner Edward A. Caban, announced the bust.
ECCLES-GONSALVES stands accused of selling firearms, machinegun conversion devices, silencers, ammunition, and narcotics from July 2023 to June 2024. The alleged criminal enterprise targeted New York City, with ECCLES-GONSALVES distributing dangerous goods such as ghost guns, which are untraceable and pose a significant threat to public safety.
According to U.S. Attorney Williams, ‘Machinegun conversion devices are particularly dangerous gun accessories that turn ordinary firearms into fully automatic weapons. Removing these from our streets is an important goal, and we will continue working with law enforcement to keep them out of New York City.’
HSI’s Arvelo echoed the sentiment, ‘The defendant trafficked illicit high-powered weapons and overlooked the dangers posed to the public. HSI New York is committed to confronting violent crime, and I commend our partners for their dedication in removing illegal guns from our streets.’
Brubaker of USPIS added, ‘The defendants used the U.S. Mail to traffic illegal firearms and other contraband without regard for public safety. Postal inspectors will continue to aggressively pursue those who use the mail to encourage gun violence and drug use.’
NYPD Commissioner Caban emphasized the urgency of the issue, ‘These charges highlight the threat posed by ghost guns. NYPD investigators will continue to pursue these cases to keep New Yorkers safe and hold accountable those involved in this illicit trade.’
